Golf Travel & Holidays in the USA
With almost half the golf courses in the entire world located there, the United States has something to offer every golfer! From scenic Oceanside courses, to palm-tree lined resort courses or an oasis in the desert – you name it, you’ll be able to find it in the US.
There’s the Monterey Peninsula - famous for Pebble Beach – ranked No 1 in Golf Digest’s Top 100 public access courses, and sister course to Spyglass Hill and The Links at Spanish Bay (also both in the Top 100) – all boasting dramatic Pacific coastal views. Pebble Beach will again be host to the US Open in 2019. The award-winning Lodge at Pebble Beach is an elegant hotel with a beautiful oceanside setting; there is The Inn at Spanish bay – a slightly more contemporary option; and the Mediterranean-styled Casa Palmero – all within easy reach of these 3 spectacular courses.
There’s the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, with the legendary Pinehurst No. 2 Course – host of the 2014 Men’s & Women’s US Opens and also home to 8 other distinctive and beautiful courses. The Majestic Carolina Hotel is always an experience for overseas visitors as it embodies the charms of its century old heritage.
There’s Kiawah Island in South Carolina, home to The Ocean Course which has hosted major golf tournaments including the Ryder Cup in 1991, the World Cup in 1997 and 2003, and the PGA Championship in 2012. It also hosted the PGA Club Professional Championship in 2005 and the Senior PGA Championship in 2007 and will be the host of the PGA Championship again in 2021. It’s a spectacular course with views of the Atlantic Ocean at every opportunity. There are 4 other impressive courses at Kiawah Island, including Turtle Point designed by Jack Nicklaus, Osprey Point designed by Tom Fazio, and Cougar Point redesigned by Gary Player in 1996. The Island itself is home to some wonderful accommodation options, including the luxurious Sanctuary Hotel and some self-contained beach front Villa options for those who prefer a more relaxed stay.
Then there is Destination Kohler – home to the most recently-famed course, Whistling Straits situated on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. Whistling Straits received a lot of media attention as the host of the 2015 US PGA – won in spectacular style by Australia’s own Jason Day – his first Major win. The links style course offered a nail-biting competition to the very last hole and along with that, provided some stunning views of the Great Lake. Destination Kohler is also home to Blackwolf Run and 2 other championship golf courses all designed by Pete Dye.
And of course, there’s Las Vegas. Base yourself in the 'city of lights' and if you can tear yourself away from the Casinos and Shows, a short drive will take you to some amazing courses like the famed Shadow Creek, designed by Tom Fazio and built by gambling magnate Steve Wynn from empty desert flatland. They reportedly spent $60 million on the development, and have spent a further $17 million on a renovation in 2008. Or there's Wolf Creek - set in the midst of dry desert canyons, the impeccably conditioned fairways look like green riverbeds - it's really quite spectacular and is fast becoming an addition to many golfers' bucket lists.
But a new area of golf in the US is emerging as an exciting new destination, and that is Oregan. It is fast becoming one of the most talked about ‘must-play’ areas of golf in the US. The impressive Bandon Dunes Resort is one of the area’s major features, home to 4 amazing coastal courses – Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes, Old Macdonald and Bandon Trails. In addition, there are some great inland courses in an area called Bend including the Sunriver and Pronghorn resorts.
With so many choices, it is impossible to talk about all the amazing golf you can play in the US - we haven’t even touched on Florida, California or the picturesque Islands of Hawaii.
